At heart, I am a story teller. Ceramics...clay and stain, allow me to comment on universal commonalities. We all get older, sometimes we are confused and many times we are angry. We all have joy, though sometimes it's a bitter sweet thing.
Sometimes it's a difficult thing to get the wet clay to lump together in the shape I want it to. We argue occasionally. Sometimes the fire does its own creative dance. I understand. It only wants to have its way sometimes and I need to listen.
Stories have always come from personal experience. Mine are no different. If I had lived with those first humans, I would have put my hand prints on the cave walls. I would have scratched the elk images in ochre and smoke. I really believe we all want to tell the stories. I am fortunate, I have clay.

| This series is based on Children's Books. Simple literary ideas are a good jumping off point for me. These are fairly straight forward images based on fairly familiar stories or rhymes. In April/May of 2006 these pieces were shown at the Sheryl Leonard Gallery in Prescott, Arizona. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Toto…Toto” , In all the confusion of the great tornado, the sweeping away of Dorothy’s house, the swirling around of everything familiar, there must have been that few moments when Toto, Dorothy’s little dog, sat alone in front of the whirling wind, looked up at the house flying through the Kansas air and thought to himself…”Crap, looks like no dinner tonight.” 16in x 8in x 16in (HWL), thrown and altered, oxide patinas, cone 6, electric kiln, wood base

“The Giving Tree”. Shel Silverstein’ book, “The Giving Tree”, deals with a difficult to explain relationship. Volumes have been written and symposiums held that try to posit and prove its philosophies. As an example of Art, it excels in getting the discussions started. It is equally difficult not to discuss it and to just accept the story as a story. Doing figurative work I am fully aware of the difficulty in reading a story along with exploring the form. 13in x 14in x 14in (HWL), handbuilt, paperclay, glazed, cone 6, electric kiln, wood base and background trees.

“The Tortoise and the Hare”. Aesop’s fables, a compendium of many Aesops’ wisdom, are pearls of straight forward common sense and the teaching of life skills. But what of the personal experiences of the characters? After all can’t you just hear Mr. Hare saying “Whoa…how’d that happen?” 11in x 19in x 19in (HWL) handbuilt, paperclay, oxides, underglaze chalk and glazed, cone 6, electric kiln, wood base

“Four and Twenty”. Four and Twenty blackbirds baked in a pie… Children’s nursery rhymes are certainly bizarre upon a more than simple reading and their meanings are lost deep in long past cultural histories. Four and twenty black birds,…24 birds, in one pie is a lot of birds to begin with. See, count ‘em, that’s a lot of birds. 7in H x 19in across. Thrown platter, handbuilt birds of paperclay, glazed, cone 6 electric kiln (sold)

“The Story Teller” The story teller’s trade has been usurped by TV, video, computer games and more. Well, the message has been better disseminated for it, but the experience of listening to the words and letting the imagination wrap itself around the story is of a wonder by itself. 20in x 19in x 19in (HWL). Handbuilt, paperclay, glazed, cone 6, electric kiln

"Mr. Bliss", J.R.R. Tolkien is best known for the Hobbit series. In addition he has written a short children's book called "Mr. Bliss" which retells the story of a certainly peculiar man, Mr. Bliss, and his new yellow car. It also trys to give credence to the existence of the girabbit. I personally don't believe in girabbits so I have chose to ignore them as I do Democrats and Republicans. (sold)
